As 2o18 came to a close, sadly so did the life of seven year old Jazmine Barnes. Jazmine and her family were shot at in what the police are calling an "unprovoked attack" on December 30th in a Walmart parking lot. When I heard about this my heart shattered. The killing of black men and women have been so much more frequent and now not even children are safe from these attacks. This is just one of many problems America has, and although no country is perfect we MUST make changes to what we deem acceptable in society. Below is a piece I wrote my freshman year and recently found. I believe this is relevant to America today, and as we enter a new year and I am hopping we recognize the problems we face and improve ourselves as a nation.
Dear America,
You are a superstar known, for you broad stripes and bright stars. You say that you are the land of the free, and the home of the brave but how can you say that when you push people away? You are unique full of culture and differences but still you want us all to be the same, little do you know eliminating race and culture will drive you insane. You have so much history in so little time yet you still make the same mistakes by only teaching us the good sides. Your people are more scared of minorities than they are of obesity but obesity is more likely to kill thee. You don’t want to help the people you see on the streets, yet you have no problem paying 20 dollars for a drink. Dear America, you have come a long way, but some things still need to change.
Sincerely,
Mckenzie
